  1. Total land area of Nigeria is 923,768sq km out of which 910,768 is land and 13000 is water. 
  2. Inland water mass constitutes about 15 million hectares including natural land manmade lakes, rivers and reservoirs.
  3. The potential of fish farming in Nigeria is estimated at 5 million metric tons.
  4. New partnership for African Development (NEPAD) has recognized fisheries as a key instrument for increasing productivity, ensuring food security and improving market access for rural dwellers and strengthening Africas performance in global markets.  

    INTRODUCTION TO AQUACULTURE

    Aquaculture is the farming of aquatic organisms including fish, molluscs, crustaceans and aquatic plants in order to increase for production.

    The need for aquaculture

    1. Growing population of the world.  
    2.Search for new protein sources
    3.Demand for low fat food
    4.Over fishing
    5.Pollution

    Fish domestication

    By domestication, we mean the transfer of an organism from its natural habitat to a captive environment.

    Cultivation system

    1.Monoculture: Cultivation of single specie in the water body.

    2.Polyculture: A combined cultivation of some species and size in the same body of water e.g Polyculture in Israel: carp + Tilapia + Silver Cap + Mullet

Sammaz 39 is one of the first-generation of provitamin A-rich maize (that is why it has orange-yellowish colour, it is enriched with vitamin A precursors), it is open pollinated and reaches full maturity in just 70 days. It was developed by the Nigerian Institute of Agricultural Research (IART) and the IITA after almost 10 years of development and testing. Apart from the high yield, the fact that it helps battle vitamin A deficiency in children, breastfeeding mothers and pregnant women is a major plus.
